The All Progressives Congress, Edo State chapter, has finally brought down the hammer on Governor Godwin Obaseki and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, for their overt sponsorship of anti-party activities in the state and promotion of violence with the announced suspension of both individuals by the authentic Chairman of the party, Colonel David Imuse.
Colonel David Imuse[rtd] announced the decision of the party in Abuja to journalists in a press conference wherein he recounted some of the infractions of Governor Godwin Obaseki and described him as a liability on a quest to destroy the party.
“Obaseki’s desperate bid to suppress all forms of perceived opposition and determination that no credible opposition emerges in the forthcoming primaries has seen him remove elected council officials with impunity,” he said.
“In light of the foregoing, it has become obvious that Mr. Obaseki has become a liability to the All Progressives Congress and we can no longer fold our arms and watch him drag our collective political fortune into the abyss in his desperation to destroy the party.”
The suspension of Obaseki and his Deputy has been received with cheers in the party’s secretariat in Edo State, with members describing the move as long overdue.
In the past months, the duo of Obaseki and Philip Shaibu, desperate to obtain another party ticket without opposition despite a record of failure in office, sponsored thuggery in the state and colluded with members of the opposition party to sabotage the agenda of the All Progressives Congress and forcefully eject high-ranking members of the party.
In another related development, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lanre Issa-Onilu, has announced that the APC National Working Committee has upheld the suspension of Anselm Ojezua, thus putting an end to the issue of “factions” in the Edo APC and affirming Colonel David Imuse [rtd] as the authentic and only Chairman of the party in the state.
This also means that the suspension of Godwin Obaseki and Philip Shaibu is recognized by the party and they are both therefore rendered ineligible to contest in the party’s primaries or fly its flag in an election, according to party rules and guidelines.
It should be noted that President Muhammadu Buhari met with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole recently at the Villa and reiterated his support for the National Chairman to enforce party guidelines in the discipline of errant members, particularly governors like Godwin Obaseki, who act with impunity and lack grassroots support required for electoral victory.
